Portes
Du Soleil
The
Portes du Soleil (1000m to 2466m) is the largest linked ski area
in the world, and consists of 14 resorts from Lake Geneva in Switzerland
through to Mont Blanc in France. The top resorts in the Portes Soleil
include Morzine, Avoriaz; Chatel; Les Gets; and St Jean D’Aulps
in France, and Les Crosets; Morgins; Champery-Planachaux; and Torgon
in Switzerland.
The runs offered throughout the ski area provide something for skiers
of all levels of ability and experience. There are many snow parks,
with half-pipes and hand rails, located in many of the resorts in
the area. All in all, Les Portes du Soleil is one of the best places
to go for an unforgettable skiing holiday. Morzine, Les Gets and
St Jean D’Aulps have it all - skiing, snowboarding, cross-country,
skidoo, ice-skating, stunning scenery - from just about the most
extensive winter resort in Europe.
In the summer try mountain biking, road cycling, para-gliding, golf,
swimming, adventure parks, tennis, canoeing, water rafting, climbing,
hiking, walking.... or maybe just relaxing in the sun by beautiful
Lake Montriand. Boat trips on French/Swiss lakes, sight-seeing in
Evian, Annecy, Geneva, Lausanne and Montreux, wine tasting in the
many local wine cellars of the regional vineyards.
The skiing season extends from December to April with each month
having something different to offer. The summer season months are
July, August and September.
December: Traditionally the lowest priced weeks
of the year, the slopes are very quiet and the fresh snow is usually
very good.
Christmas & New Year: Experience the festive
season in charming alpine villages.
January: Often considered the best time to ski.
Escape from the January blues of home and ski on what is typically
the best quality snow of the season, usually on un-crowded mountains.
February: Still very good snow with busy slopes
and bustling towns and villages.
March: Allow for relaxed lunches on sunny terraces
as the lifts stay open later with the longer days and warmer weather.
April: Take advantage of spring snow conditions
and the best sunbathing weather within the mountain resorts. It
is usually very quiet on the slopes.
